Frequently Asked Questions About Therapy

How do I know i am ready for therapy?

By coming to this website, some part of you must be ready. You are ready for therapy when you are open to explore those ‘stuck points’ in your life. It may be persistent negative moods, negative self talk, excessive worry, trauma symptoms, etc. You are ready for therapy when you are ready to explore what changes you can make to better your life.

Is therapy worth the money?

Therapy is is not just an expense, it is an investment. It is an investment in you. The positive changes you can make in therapy can be profoundly beneficial going forward in life. If paying out of pocket is not affordable, call your insurance provider to explore your mental health coverage and available providers in-network. I always suggest working with your therapist on finding a schedule that works for both your mental health needs and financial constraints.

how often do I need to have sessions?

This depends on many factors. This is a decision best made with your therapist after your initial session. This depends on safety concerns, severity of symptoms and financial constraints. Collaborate with your therapist to make an informed decision.

There are so many therapists out there. How do I know if you are the right therapist for me?

Ultimately, that is up to you. I suggest coming in for one to two sessions to get a feel for my style. I provide information on my website and profiles to try and offer some information about me. I also offer a free phone consultation to allow us to explore my therapy services. If you feel I am not a good fit, I am happy to help you find the correct one. All therapists have different styles. The right fit is out there.

What should i expect in therapy?

Expect to find a supportive and nurturing environment to challenge the unhelpful parts of your life. Expect an environment free of any judgment.

I have had bad therapy in the past, and I am hesitant to start again.

Unfortunately, this happens. I usually explore any past therapy experiences with clients to explore what did and did not work. This way, we can build off of your past success, and we can work to avoid things that do not work well for you.

How long will i be in therapy?

The therapy process is different for every person. Some people only need short-term therapy interventions to feel they have completed therapy. Some people need a longer time in therapy to fully work through challenging thoughts/emotions and past trauma. We will continually assess for your need and desire for therapy as we work together.

do I need special equipment to do online therapy?

The online platform I use is Simple Practice. You can download the free app and use any smart phone or tablet with video capabilities. You can also use a laptop/desktop with video capabilities.

I am nervous to start therapy.

Starting therapy is a courageous first step on your journey, and it can be a very nerve wrecking step. This is something we can openly discuss in your phone consolation and/or your first session. I would be happy to explore how I can best assist in ensuring that my office and your therapy session are as comfortable and secure as possible.
